OPEN POSITION: Resident Director for A Better Chance of Wilton – 25 March 2019
A Better Chance of Wilton (www.abcwilton.org) is a not-for-profit organization which has two houses (a Boys’ house and a Girls’ house) for which 6-8 scholars reside in each house, supervised by resident directors and attend Wilton High School. The ABC Program is seeking Resident Directors for our Girls’ House and for our Boys’ House. The RD’s role is to manage the house, provide a stable and nurturing environment for the scholars, be an outstanding role model, foster an environment to ensure academic excellence, be an academic advisor and supervise their daily activities: academic, extracurricular, social and interpersonal. Housing is provided as is food on premises (details on living arrangements will be provided)
The Resident Directors may be employed full or part-time elsewhere Monday-Friday while working for the ABC Program, provided that such employment does not preclude carrying out the responsibilities. At least one of the Resident Directors for each house must be on the premises until roughly 8:30 am when the scholars leave for school and from 5:30 pm on weekdays. Resident Directors oversee the ABC Houses on weekends as well, other than Sundays from 9 am to 9 PM, one full weekend per month (Friday Night to Sunday Night) (when scholars go to host families); and school holiday weekends and vacations (when scholars go home). This position is from late August through June 30. Resident Directors invited to continue their position for a following year may remain in the ABC House for the summer.
Resident Directors can be married couples and share the position. If a couple, at least one should have a minimum 3-5 years’ experience working with and developing young adults in their teens and serving as a mentor/model of successful behavior. A college degree is required and a background in education, social work, and/or counseling is preferred, as is a knowledge of public schools and their operations, and working with school officials, parents and students. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills, be good problem solvers and be self-starters with strong common sense and mature judgment. Additionally, they need to be good listeners and understand managing personalities and conflicts, especially when dealing with teenagers. A commitment to promoting diversity and an ability to maintain a high level of communication, professionalism, empathy and confidentiality is important.
